Spirit Golf
- We should appreciate the 18th hole loss by Michelson and all the 2nd place finishes that would destroy most players. This is what we seek in ourselves. Real character. Awesome recoveries and the defeat of such pain and suffering! Defeat is where we find the seed of a true hero.

favorite open moment
- Easily Watson at Pebble. But the great moments at Winged Foot with Zoeller and Norman also come to mind.

praise to the USGA
- I attended the 2009 opening round on Thursday June 18th. I was one of thousands who hung in there and endured the monsoons by mid afternoon. After leaving soaking wet & returning to my home in upstate NY I turned on the TV only to hear that the USGA would not honor Thursday's tickets. By the next day they reconsidered & I went to see the final round on Monday. It was my first golf event. I'm 62 yrs old & that was one of the greatest sports thrills I've had. I'm glad the USGA had the good sense to change their minds.

- David Graham Tee to Green at Merion. Best round of golf I've ever watched.

1980
- For me the best moment was Jack Nicklaus winning in 1980. "Jack is Back!" went up on scoreboards and people running around the golf course shouting those words. Jack had looked washed up in 1979, then he opened the '80 US Open with a 63 and went on to outduel Isao Aoki down the stretch. After Jack putted out on the last hole to seal the win, fans went crazy, but he shushed them because Aoki still had to putt out. As always, classy, especially in victory.

Carnage at Winged Foot
- It's not necessarily a pleasant memory, but it's an indelible image -- that carnage down the stretch at Winged Foot in 2006. Geoff Ogilvy survived, but almost nobody else did. It was just Phil Mickelson's boneheaded meltdown, it was also Colin Montgomery's meltdown, and Jim Furyk's missed opportunity. So many of the golfers looked like zombies by the end of that tournament, stumbling down the homestretch.
