How my tip will help:

Learn to visualize and plan your pitch and chip shots properly.

Here's my tip:

The hole is not your target.

When chipping or pitching, many players mistakenly aim toward the hole as a target. Instead, think in terms of what the shot will look like in order to get the ball close to the cup. Your target should be a landing area that will allow the ball to get on the green, take any break needed and roll like a putt when it gets near the hole.

A good drill is to visualize a chip or pitch on your practice green. Place a towel on the green where you want to land the ball. Chip or pitch shots with the goal of landing the ball on the towel. This will develop your touch around the greens and also help you to "see" the shot that gets the ball close.

You will also develop a great sense of distance control for these shots, which is a critical aspect of good short game play.

On the course, visualize a towel on the landing spot when you have chip or pitch. You will get it up and down more often.

Advice

  • As a reminder - when you go to practice, always start with your short game to guard against skipping it after hitting balls.
