2016 Olympics Golf Tournaments

It's been more than 100 years since golf was part of the Olympics. But in 2016, Olympic golf returns. The information on this page about the 2016 Olympic golf tournaments is based on the format, field restrictions and qualifications process proposed by the International Golf Federation, which the Rio Games are expected to adopt.

Dates of 2016 Olympics: Aug. 5-21, 2016
Site of 2016 Olympics: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Dates of 2016 Olympic golf tournaments: TBD

Are there men's and women's tournaments?
Yes, a men's tournament and women's tournament will both take place at the Rio Games.

Will team and individual medals be awarded?
No, only individual medals will be awarded. The Top 3 finishers will win gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, in both the men's and women's events.

Where will the tournaments be played?
The 2016 Olympic golf tournaments will take place on a golf course that does not yet exist. It was only in early 2012 that the Rio Games selected USA-based golf course architect Gil Hanse to design and build a new golf course for the Games. Hanse will have input from World Golf Hall of Fame member Amy Alcott on the project. The course is being built in Rio and is tentatively called The Rio 2016 Golf Club.

What is the format for the tournaments?
Both the men's and women's 2016 Olympic golf tournaments will be 72 holes in duration, played at stroke play. There is no cut.

How many golfers get to play?
Sixty men and sixty women will make up the fields for the tournaments.

How do golfers qualify to play in the 2016 Olympics?
Which 60 men and which 60 women get to play in the 2016 Summer Games will be based on the world golf rankings, and several selection provisions suggested by the International Golf Federation:

  • The top 15 golfers in the world rankings gain automatic entry but with a maximum of four golfers from any one country;
  • Excluding golfers in the top 15, only two golfers per country get in. So if there are (for example) three Australians inside the top 15 who automatically qualify, then no other Australians get into the field.

How that selection criteria works is described in more detail in our FAQ, What is the Olympic golf tournament format and field?

To see an example of the type of fields this selection criteria will produce, see the article Sample Olympic Golf Tournament Fields.

We also have an Olympic Golf index page where we post updates, as well as information about past Olympic tournaments (yes, golf was once part of the Olympics - barely).
