Scott didn't pick up a golf club until high school because he thought there were no opportunities in golf for African-Americans. But once he committed, he caught on quickly. He volunteered to be the manager of the boys golf team so he could be closer to the game and won his first tournament after replacing a sick team member.
Following a summer of endless practices, he was shooting in the 70s prior to entering his senior year. A technicality prevented him from joining the team his senior year and Scott was faced with one of the biggest decisions in his life. He decided to keep playing as much as he could to bolster his resume, entering 16 junior tournaments and posting an average score of 75.
He promoted himself to Division I schools across the country and single-handedly earned 13 college scholarship offers. He chose Kentucky State because it was closest to home, and he prepared for a career in golf.
What looked like a promising future was rife with disappointments off the course that tested his resolve to keep playing. Most recently, after moving to the Southwest play on the Gateway Tour, his sponsor support fell through and he found himself stranded in Arizona. When he finally got back home, he sent in his application for The Big Break. "I'm amazed that I can continue to do it," he said. "It must be my destiny."
