Her father, Ralph, successfully played the PGA Tour from 1970-79. His career highlights included finishing 13th in the 1973 U.S. Open and 15th in the 1974 Masters. He had a temper on the golf course and had a tendency to break clubs. As a result, Sarah grew up using the broken clubs that were shortened and regripped. Father and daughter remain close, as he currently caddies for her at Futures Tour events.
Johnston is a self-professed late bloomer. At Furman she starting her collegiate career as a walk-on and eventually earned second team All-American honors.
On the Duramed Futures Tour, Johnston is one of the longest hitters, averaging 270 yards off the tee. Playing the circuit since 2004, she has posted eight Top 10 finishes with her best finish being two ties for second.
In pursuit of achieving her dream of winning the U.S. Women's Open, she feels good about playing in "The Big Break VI." "This is not golf it's 'The Big Break'," she said. "Were all good."
