While recovering from the injury, her family moved to a house on a golf course and decided to become golfers. Her first year in high school, she practiced on the range with her father teaching her from books he read. The next year, she was captain of her high school boys' team, and later won the Arizona State Girls' Junior Championship in her junior year.
In her senior season, she defended the ASJC title and claimed the Arizona Women's State Championship. Laura was named 1997 Arizona Junior Golf Association player of the year and in 1998 was selected as one of ten girls in the country as AJGA Compaq Scholastic All-Americans.
