Tall and lean, the fourth-grade teacher has a fluid swing and a passion for the game. Jay started playing golf at age 9 when his grandfather took him to the course and got him hooked. He was recruited out of high school by Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, the city where he first worked as an assistant golf pro.
Jay also has tried his hand at playing on several mini-tours. His proudest moment was starting the final round of a tournament in Japan six shots back and finishing with a score of 67 to win by two.
Now, he finds himself practicing and playing golf when not in the classroom, where he uses many golf analogies as part of his teaching techniques. For example, when a student is not paying attention, Jay calls him a "lost ball in the rough."
