Profile - Guy Woodman:
Guy grew up with dreams of playing rugby for England and refused to take a golf lesson when his parents first made the suggestion. But once he gave in, he was hooked on the game. He began playing at age 9 and progressed quickly.

At 10, his game earned him membership at the Royal Ascot Golf Club – located just 30 miles outside of London – where juniors, historically, had not been permitted to join before their 12th birthday.

Dropped off by his parents after school each day, it was there that he fashioned his game. At 12, he realized he was good enough to take his game to the next level, but also knew he had to concentrate on one sport only.

"I didn't want to take a beating anymore," he said. "So, I chose golf over rugby."

Guy soaked in the game. Attending clinics and benefiting from the tutoring of noted, local instructor, he excelled and, eventually turned pro.

His career was progressing nicely until in 2001 – after qualifying for the Challenge Tour – he suffered a back injury, which later was diagnosed as two prolapsed disks. At times, he couldn’t even walk.

After a four-month hiatus, he tried to return to form but had no success until someone recommended a physical therapist, which happened to be the same one used by Nick Faldo. Four years later, his back remains an issue but has not kept him from playing full time.

Currently, Guy plays on both the Challenge Tour and Europro Tour and has made the cut in the majority of tournaments in which competes. He has shot a 63 in competition and hopes "The Big Break IV" will be his ticket back to playing the European Tour.

He had his one chance in 2002 while on extended vacation in South Africa. He entered a Vodacom Tour event and finished in the top 10, which automatically qualified him for a spot in the South African Open. Ill prepared, he missed the cut, and has wished he could have that opportunity back ever since.

"This could open an entirely new door for my career," Guy said. "And once you get those exemptions, who knows, anything can happen."
