He first played golf at the age of 4 and won a junior tournament two years later. At inter-provincial tournaments he would play against the likes of Nick Price, Mark McNulty and Gavan Levenson, to name a few. A highpoint of his career was playing for South Africa's Eastern Province under-23 team.
He married in 1981 and stopped playing golf soon after due to family and financial commitments. During his absence from the game he moved to California and became a computer programmer for Bank of America. As a hobby he raced motorcycles at a high level AMA Pro Thunder and Superbike.
After quitting golf for 18 years, he claims to have shot 65 for his first round back to get hooked on the game again. He started working on his golf game but had a setback when he was involved in a wreck racing motorcycles.
In 2000, he quit computer engineering to play professional golf, and in 2005 he moved to Florida to work on his game. Currently, Gavin plays on the Heartland Tour.
