The continuing success of the Golf Channel's "Big Break" franchise brings us to "Big Break X: Michigan." Which, you can probably deduce, is the 10th installment of the series, and was taped in Michigan.
The hook for this season of "The Big Break" is that the players compete as teams, and those teams are comprised of two golfers - one male, one female - who have some sort of pre-existing relationship. Maybe they are dating, or even married; perhaps they are brother-sister, ex-significant others or just good friends.
The "Big Break X" cast has 16 members, so eight teams, and here are those teams and golfers:
Haymes Snedker and Bernie Luse
Snedeker, from Fairhope, Ala., is the brother of PGA Tour golfer Brandt Snedeker. He is currently a judge in Alabama who plays competitive amateur golf. Bernadette "Bernie" Luse is a former LPGA player looking to get back into competitive golf. The two met when Snedeker was an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi and Luse was a player on the women's golf team.
James Vargas and Andrea VanderLende
Vargas, from Miami, plays on the Hooters Tour. VanderLende, from Longwood, Fla., plays on the Futures Tour. They dated as teens, attended the University of Florida, and now characterize their relationship as a "brother/sister" one.
Sally Dee and David Mobley
A pair of long drivers, Dee is from Tampa, Fla., and a former LPGA player; Mobley is from Huntersville, N.C. They met in 2003 on the long-drive circuit, and each won their respective divisions at the 2004 Re/Max Long Drive Championship.
Amber Prange and Robby Shaw
Amber, from Noblesville, Ind., is the sister of "Big Break V" winner Ashley Prange; Shaw is from Louisville, Ky. The Golf Channel says they "look more like models on the cover of a golf fashion magazine than the serious and talented golfers they are." Prange plays on the Futures Tour.
Hugo Leon and Camila Mori
Natives of Chile, Leon now resides in Jupiter, Fla., and Mori in Miami. The pair are longtime friends, dating to being members of the national junior golf team in Chile at age 12. Leon attended Southwestern Louisiana University and Mori the University of South Carolina. Now they embark on professional golf careers together.
Casey Lubahn and Rachel Lubahn
This married couple lives in Lansing, Mich., after each played golf at Michigan State University. Casey is an assistant golf coach at MSU, while Rachel is Program Director of the First Tee of Mid-Michigan and a teaching professional at an area club.
Sherri McDonald and Michael Michaelides
McDonald, from Lambertville, N.J., and Michaelides, from East Elmhurst, N.Y., describe their relationship as "one part allies, one part rivals, but always great friends." Both have experience playing on professional tours, and now coach at rival schools.
Rachel Melendez and Otis Smith
Melendez and Smith work together at Charlie Yates Golf Course, part of East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Rachel is an instructor for the First Tee and Otis is a PGA Professional. Each is looking to try the tour life.
