The 2002 Ryder Cup was originally scheduled for 2001, but was postponed a year due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Prior to this, the Ryder Cup was always played in odd-numbered years; since, it has been played in even-numbered years.

Team Europe reclaimed the cup after the American's stirring comeback at the 1999 Ryder Cup by doing something that Team USA, to this point in the competition's history, had usually done itself: winning the singles session.

The two sides entered the Sunday Singles tied at 8-8. But Colin Montgomerie - whose 4-0-1 record was tops for the tournament - led off with a 5-and-4 victory over Scott Hoch, setting the tone for the day. Team USA managed to win only two of 12 singles matches, Team Europe winning five, the rest being halved.

Phil Mickelson, playing second-to-last for the Americans, lost to unheralded Phillip Price; and Tiger Woods, in the last spot, halved with Jesper Parnevik. But it was Paul McGinley's half-point earned against Jim Furyk that pushed Europe to the points needed (14.5) to win back the cup.

David Toms topped Team USA with a 3-1-1 mark, while Hoch was 0-3-1. Bernhard Langer was another star for Europe, going 3-0-1.
