Team USA's opposition in the Ryder Cup had always been Team Great Britain. But at the 1973 Ryder Cup, America's foe became Team Great Britain and Ireland. Team GB&I lasted through the 1975 and 1977 cups, then was expanded to Team Europe beginning in 1979.

In reality, though, the change was one in name only. Irish golfers - from both Northern Ireland the Republic of Ireland - had played on the Great Britain team in many previous Ryder Cups.

For example, Irishman Christy O'Connor Sr. played in his 10th and final Ryder Cup in 1973, which at the time was a Ryder Cup record. Unfortunately for O'Connor, he went 1-3-1 and set a Ryder Cup record for most career losses (21), a mark later tied by Neil Coles, who also was 1-3-1 this year.

Team GB&I got off to a great start, winning both Day 1 sessions and holding a 5.5 to 2.5 lead. Two of GB&I wins were recorded by the partnership of Bernard Gallacher and Brian Barnes. Alas, before the Day 2 sessions began, Gallacher fell ill with food poisoning. This was during a period of near-total USA domination in the Ryder Cup, so maybe it wouldn't have mattered. But with the Barnes-Gallacher team broken up, Team USA squared the match heading into singles.

And Team USA then dominated singles, 11-5, for the final 19-13 winning margin.

The 1973 Ryder Cup was also the final appearance as a player by Arnold Palmer. Palmer went 2-3-0, losing his final Ryder Cup match to Peter Oosterhuis.

Some trivia: The first hole-in-one ever made in a Ryder Cup happened here. GB&I's Peter Butler recorded it in a foursomes match on Day 2.
