Lake Nona, through its participation in the Tavistock Cup and by virtue of its many members who are pro golfers, is now one of the best-known clubs in Florida. But in 1990, it was just an exclusive, 3-year-old club.
Participants in that first Solheim Cup recall that it was sparsely attended and received scant media attention - certainly there were few indications of how big the Solheim Cup would later become.
Each team had eight players. On the first day, there were four foursomes matches; on Day 2, four four-ball matches; and on Day 3, eight singles matches.
The first match in Solheim Cup history was a foursomes match between Pat Bradley/Nancy Lopez (USA) and Laura Davies/Alison Nicholas (Europe). Davies and Nicholas won that match, 2 and 1.
Team USA defeated Team Europe by a final score of 11.5 to 4.5. For match results, see our 1990 Solheim Cup page.
