Lowest Final Score in a Major Championship (Men)

PGA Tour Records: Low Stroke Total in Major

By Brent Kelley, About.com

This record concerns the lowest aggregate score (fewest strokes over 72 holes) in men's major championships. Four of the five lowest totals came in just two events:

265 strokes

  • David Toms, in 2001 PGA Championship

266 strokes

  • Phil Mickelson, 2001 PGA Championship

267 strokes

  • Steve Elkington, 1995 PGA Championship
  • Colin Montgomerie, 1995 PGA Championship
  • Greg Norman, 1993 British Open

Pity poor Mickelson and Montgomerie, who make this list yet didn't even win the tournament! Mickelson finished a stroke back of recordholder David Toms; Monty lost to Elkington in a playoff.

Here are the records for lowest total scores in each of the four majors:

  • Masters: 270, Tiger Woods, 1997
  • U.S. Open: 272, Jack Nicklaus, 1980; Lee Janzen, 1993; Tiger Woods, 2000
  • British Open: 267, Greg Norman, 1993
  • PGA Championship: 265, David Toms, 2001
