About the PGA Tour Stanford St. Jude Championship:


The St. Jude Championship is played every year in the Memphis, Tenn., area, and benefits the St. Jude Children's Hospital. Entertainer Danny Thomas was long associated with this tournament in its past.

2008 Tournament
Justin Leonard birdied the second playoff to win this event for the second time. He defeated Robert Allenby and Trevor Immelman in the playoff after all three finished at 276. Leonard posted rounds of 68-73-67-68 in what was his 12th career PGA Tour victory.

2007 Recap
Woody Austin shot the lowest final-round score in the history of the tournament, a 62, to finish at 13-under 267 and win by five strokes over Brian Davis. Adam Scott took a 3-stroke lead into the final round but shot 75 and wound up nine strokes behind.

The PGA Tour Stanford St. Jude Championship is currently played at TPC Southwind, a PGA Tour-owned course in the Memphis suburb of Germantown, Tenn. The tournament has been played at TPC Southwind since 1989.

PGA Tour Stanford St. Jude Championship Trivia and Notes:

  • The first round of 59 in PGA Tour history was shot in this event. Al Geiberger shot 59 in 1977, when he won the St. Jude Classic on the South Course at Colonial Country Club.

  • This tournament was first played in 1958 as the Memphis Invitational Open. Billy Maxwell was the inaugural winner.

  • Entertainer Danny Thomas was associated this tournament for many years, and from 1970-84 it was known as the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic.

  • Dave Hill must have really liked this tournament - four of his 13 career PGA Tour wins came here. Hill won in 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1973.
  • Hill is the only four-time winner of the St. Jude Classic, and Lee Trevino (1971, 1972, 1980) is the only other golfer to win it at least three times.

  • Hill, Trevino and David Toms (2203-04) are the only back-to-back winners.
