LPGA players are highly visible and becoming even more marketable athletes. From 2001 to 2005, the LPGA's regular season network ratings increased by 38-percent. That's a big increase.
LPGA players compete in a minimum of 35 tournaments and can be found on 323 million television sets in 33 countries. It's a worldwide audience. Players on Tour represent more than 24 countries and viewers are supporting LPGA events. Attendance at live LPGA tournaments in 2006 was up by 11-percent over 2005 figures.
Commissioner Carolyn F. Bivens said that the 2006 season was a year to remember: "This year has showcased an emergence of young stars and a re-emergence of dominant veterans. It has been one of the most competitive and compelling seasons in the history of the LPGA."
The 2007 schedule brings new venues and historical venues to the Tour, and plenty of excitement. "Three new events in 2007, the return of The Solheim Cup and the LPGA's first-ever visit to the St. Andrews, I am confident (2007) will be even more exciting for not only our players, but for our fans and sponsors," Bivens said.
In 2007, players will be competing for an average purse of $1,596,617, which is nearly a 10-percent increase from 2006. With overall prize money totaling $54.285 million and ten events featuring $2 million or more in prize money (five more than in 2006), this 2007 season will be another year to remember. As I mentioned, television viewership is on the rise, but even LPGA Rookie Blogs are on the rise. In 2006, the rookie blogs by Morgan Pressel, Minea Blomqvist, Ai Miyazato and Virada Nirapathpongporn received more a half a million hits, and the rookie blogs are one of the most popular areas on LPGA.com Web site.
With a new wave of players entering the Tour, the LPGA launched an updated marketing platform and brand: "These Girls Rock!"
As reported in USA Today, "Twenty-four year old Lorena Ochoa won the AP Female Athlete of the Year award in 2006. She received double the point total of French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo, who captured Wimbledon and the Australian Open."
We do rock!
In a League Report Card issued by Sports Business Journal, which surveys several key sponsorship satisfaction categories, corporate sponsors ranked the LPGA No. 1 over other major sports. Those interested in investigating sponsorship opportunities, can contact the LPGA.
