Chilly First Day at MCI Heritage Classic

The Diary of PGA Tour Caddie Russ Holden

From Russ Holden, PGA Tour Caddie, for About.com

(Editor's Note: Russ Holden is a PGA Professional and the caddie for World Golf Hall of Fame member and 2004 European Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer. He also is CEO of the charitable organization, Caddy For a Cure. Holden's tour diary appears regularly on About.com Golf. This entry was filed following the first round of the 2005 MCI Heritage Classic at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C.)

Hello from the frozen tundra called Hilton Head. It was 40 degrees here this morning and we were very cold out on the golf course.

Thank goodness we had great weather for the opening day of Caddy for a Cure on Tuesday. The three participants had the times of their lives caddying for and interacting with Bernhard Langer, Paul Azinger and defending MCI Champion Stewart Cink. I especially liked my concept when Jim Britt carried my bag all day! That was really the icing on the cake.

The golf course played hard for us today, but we can make no excuses when a guy like Peter Lonard shoots 9-under. How he did that is beyond me, but that is usually the way it is on the PGA Tour. When you put 144 of the world's greatest players on a golf course it is not unlikely that someone will go crazy and shoot lights-out. "These guys are good" is a profound statement as to how good they really are. Our good friend from the Ryder Cup Thomas Levet also shot 7-under. It is a perfect course for Thomas to play well on. His little fade and perfect short iron game suit Harbour Town to a "T." We shall see.

We need to go 4-under in the second round to put ourselves back in position to have a good week. You can rest assured that there is no giving up in Bernhard Langer ... or his caddie!
