The men's Western Open (known by other names later in its history) is the oldest golf tournament on the PGA Tour schedule outside of the U.S. Open. It was created and, for much its history staged, by the Western Golf Association. Beginning in 1930, the Women's Western Golf Association organized an event for women golfers, the Women's Western Open. In its early years it was the biggest women's tournament in the world (at least until the U.S. Women's Open arrived).

The Women's Western Open was played yearly until 1967, when it was discontinued. Although the LPGA Tour did not begin play until 1950, all Western Opens played - including those prior to 1950 - are today recognized as major championships by the LPGA.
