2014 PGA Championship: McIlroy Wins Another One

Recap and final scores for the 2014 PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy took a 1-stroke victory at the 2014 PGA Championship, rushing to beat not just his opponents but also darkness.

The final round ended in near total darkness after a lengthy rain delay earlier in the round. McIlroy, playing in the final pairing, played up on the final hole - he hit his tee shot while the pairing ahead, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, was still in the fairway; then played his second shot to the green while the duo ahead waited at the back the green.

But the rush job worked: Everyone finished, preventing the tournament's extension into Monday. And when it was over, McIlroy had won his second PGA Championship title.

McIlroy finished at 16-under 268, one shot ahead of Mickelson. Fowler, two back, tied for third with Henrik Stenson.

For McIlroy, it was his fourth win in a major. At age 25, he thus became one of the youngest golfers ever to reach four majors. Just three weeks earlier McIlroy had won the 2014 British Open. In his next start, he won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. So when he won here, McIlroy had three wins in three starts.

McIlroy began the final round in the lead, but carded two front nine bogeys. Mickelson and Fowler, meanwhile, were knocking in birdies, and Stenson was making a move, too. All three led McIlroy early on the back nine, and when McIlroy made the turn he was three shots off the lead.

But McIlroy started that back nine with an eagle. He added birdies at Nos. 13 and 17. Meanwhile, Mickelson and Fowler had given strokes back. When McIlroy rolled in the birdie putt at 17, it allowed him to take a 2-stroke lead to the very dark final hole.

And McIlroy had to earn it there. He nearly hit into a water hazard off the tee, and did hit into a greenside bunker on the par-5 hole. And Mickelson nearly chipped in for eagle. But "nearly" wasn't enough for Mickelson to catch McIlroy when McIlroy hit a great lag putt up the slope to the hole. A simple tap-in for par provided McIlroy another Wanamaker Trophy.

It was Mickelson's second runner-up finish in a PGA Championship and his ninth overall second-place finish in a major. Fowler finished in the Top 5 at all four majors in 2014, joining Tiger Woods (2000, 2005) and Jack Nicklaus (1971, 1973) as the only golfers to finish Top 4 in all four professional majors in a calendar year.
