Bubba Watson Wins 2014 Masters for His Second Green Jacket

Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth began the final round of the 2014 Masters tied at 5-under par, and appeared ready to battle the whole day. But Watson earned a 2-stroke lead by the time they reached the back nine, and he held steady over most of the final nine holes to win his second Green Jacket.

Watson first won at the 2012 Masters. He had the experience and course know-how. Spieth was only 20 years old, just in his second season as a pro. Yet it was Spieth who got off to the better start in the final round. After seven holes of Round 4, Spieth led Watson by two strokes. But the tournament turned on Holes 8 and 9 at Augusta National: Spieth went bogey-bogey, while Watson went birdie-birdie. That 4-shot swing moved Watson from two down to two up.

Watson bogied the 10th and his lead was back to one. But Spieth bogied No. 12, then Watson birdied No. 13 to push his lead to three strokes, where it remained until he holed out on the 18th. Watson earned the victory in Bubba fashion: booming drives that left short approaches, creativity and shot shaping, and a deft touch on the tough Augusta greens.

Watson finished at 8-under 280, with Jonas Blixt tying Spieth for second at 283.

The victory made Watson the 17th golfer to win more than one Masters, and also just the second left-handed golfer to earn more than one major championship trophy. Watson won his second Masters in his sixth start in the tournament, tying Jimmy Demaret and Arnold Palmer for second place on the fastest-to-win-two-Masters list (Horton Smith is the recordholder with two wins in his first three Masters appearances).

It was a great year for the over-50 set at Augusta National. Fifty-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez finished fourth; 56-year-old Bernhard Langer tied for eighth; and 54-year-old Fred Couples was in contention into the early part of the fourth round before fading to 21st.

The 2014 Masters was played minus the Eisenhower Tree, a longtime landmark on the 17th hole; it was so severely damaged in an ice storm a couple months before the tournament that the club removed it.
