2006 Masters

Recap and Scores for the 2006 Masters Tournament

Phil Mickelson played steady, solid golf all week and closed with his best round of the tournament - a 69 - to win the 2006 Masters. It was Mickelson's second Masters championship, and his second-straight win in a major (on the heels of his 2005 PGA Championship victory).

Mickelson's opening 70 was three strokes behind first-day leader Vijay Singh (who would wind up placing eighth. Chad Campbell took the second-round lead, with Mickelson four behind. Mickelson took a one-stroke lead after three rounds, ahead of Fred Couples and Campbell, with Tiger Woods and Tim Clark among those two strokes off the lead.

But Woods, Couples and Campbell were unable to mount charges in the final round. Instead, it was Clark who moved up the leaderboard with a 69 and finished in solo second, two strokes behind Mickelson. But Mickelson's victory was more secure than the final 2-stroke margin indicates, given that Clark closed with a hole-out birdie from the sand on the 18th.

Two-time Masters champ Jose Maria Olazabal did charge on Sunday with the best round of the day, a 66, but started too far back to catch Mickelson.

Charles Coody, winner of the 1971 Masters, made his final appearance in the tournament this year.
