The "victory lap" - that's what the 1990 U.S. Open is best-remembered for, even though Hale Irwin's sprint around the 18th green wasn't actually in celebration of a win. That had to wait one more day.
Irwin, 45 years old and a 2-time champion of this event, played the 1990 U.S. Open as a special ivitee of the USGA. He made the most of his opportunity, firing a final-round 67 to get in the clubhouse at 8-under 280.
But there were still others on the course who could catch Irwin. Nick Faldo and Billy Ray Brown each came up one stroke short. But journeyman Mike Donald, shooting 71, managed to tie Irwin at 8-under. That meant Irwin and Donald had to face off in an 18-hole playoff the following day.
But once again, the scheduled number of holes wasn't enough for these two. After 18 holes of the playoff, Irwin and Donald were again tied at 74. They kept going, switching to a sudden-death playoff format, and Irwin finally won the title with a birdie on the 19th hole.
It was Irwin's third U.S. Open victory, and he set a new record as the tournament's oldest winner at 45 years and 15 days old.
At the opposite end of the scales were two amateurs making their major championship debuts and making the cut. Phil Mickelson turned 20 during the tournament and finished tied for 29th. David Duval was just shy of 19, and finished tied for 56th.
Curtis Strange, trying to win a third consecutive U.S. Open title, was two strokes off the lead after three rounds, but shot 75 in the final round and finished tied for 21st.
