Scotsman Sandy Lyle picked up his second major championship victory at the 1988 Masters, beating Mark Calcavecchia by one stroke. And that meant one thing to past winners of The Masters: Haggis would be on the menu at the 1989 Champions Dinner.
It turned out to be Lyle's final win on the PGA Tour, although he won four more times on the European Tour following the 1988 Masters.
Lyle reached the 72nd hole tied with Calcavecchia at 6-under. A playoff appeared likely when Lyle's drive found the fairway bunker. But he hit a brilliant recovery shot, a 7-iron to within 10 feet of the cup. And then Lyle rolled in the downhill birdie putt for the win.
