The 1987 PGA Championship was played at the PGA's own PGA National Golf Club. And the Champion Course produced a champion known for playing tough golf courses well: Larry Nelson.
Third-round co-leaders D.A. Weibring and Mark McCumber struggled together in the final round, shooting 76 and 77, respectively. That opened the door for PGA past champions Nelson (72) and Wadkins (73). When they each finished at 287, a sudden-death playoff ensued. And Nelson ended it by making a par on the first extra hole.
For Nelson, it was his second PGA Championship victory and the final of his three wins in majors.
