Fuzzy Zoeller and Greg Norman pulled away from the field at the 1984 U.S. Open, and then Zoeller ran away from Norman in a playoff.
This is the tournament where Zoeller waved the white flag, then forced Norman's surrender the next day. Zoeller and Norman finished tied at 4-under 276, five strokes ahead of everyone else.
As the final round wore on, it became clear that it was a two-man race between Zoeller and Norman. Norman was playing one group ahead of Zoeller, who was in the final pairing. Zoeller had a 3-stroke lead after nine holes of the final round, but Norman got back into a tie by the 17th.
On the 18th hole, Norman hit his approach to the green into the grandstands. After getting free relief, he chipped to 45 feet, and then holed that long par putt to remain in a tie. Zoeller, standing back in the 18th fairway, waved a white towel in mock surrender after Norman's long par-saver.
Then Zoeller parred the 72nd hole to force an 18-hole playoff the following day. That playoff was really no contest; Norman double-bogeyed the second hole to fall three behind. Zoeller lead by five after nine holes, and wound up winning by eight strokes, shooting 67 to Norman's 75.
On the final green of the playoff, Norman waved a white towel himself, only this time the surrender was real.
It was Zoeller's second major championship victory (his first was the 1979 Masters), and the sixth of his 10 PGA Tour wins.
