His victory at the 1978 Masters was the third Masters championship won by Gary Player, and the ninth overall major of his career. He was 42 years old, which made him, at that time, the oldest-ever Masters winner.
Those are impressive feats. But perhaps more impressive than the win itself is how Player won the 1978 Masters. He started the final round seven strokes off the lead, but put on a back-nine run for the ages.
Player fired a 64 in the final round, which ties the record for lowest final-round score ever at The Masters. But among those who've carded a final-round 64, Player is the only one to do so and win. He birdied seven of his last 10 holes, and on the back nine shot 30 - at the time, tying the back-nine scoring record.
