In America's bicentennial year, the 1976 PGA Championship was played at the Washington, D.C.-area Congressional Country Club. For the first time in the tournament's history, rain delays forced it back to a Monday finish.
Dave Stockton, Don January and Raymond Floyd all did take advantage, however, move up the leaderboard throughout the day. January and Floyd were in the clubhouse tied at 282 when Stockton, who started the day four behind Coody, reached the final green. Stockton needed a par to win, and that's what he got when he sank a 10-foot putt.
The victory was Stockton's second in this tournament - he also won the 1970 PGA Championship - and proved to be his last win on the PGA Tour. Stockton's 281 total was, at the time, the highest winning score in the PGA Championship's stroke-play era.
