1973 PGA Championship
Recap and Scores for the 1973 PGA Championship Golf Tournament

A second-round 68 moved Jack Nicklaus up the leaderboard, he took the lead after the third round, and pulled away in the final round to win by four strokes.

The 1973 PGA Championship is generally regarded as the place where Nicklaus surpassed Bobby Jones as holder of the most major championship titles. Jones won 13 majors, seven of which were professional events and six of which were amateur events. In Jones' day, the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur championships were bigger than most pro events, and 13 - combining his professional and amateur majors - is usually counted as Jones' total.

In 1973, most observers also included Nicklaus' two amateur majors as part of his overall total of majors won. The 1973 PGA Championship was Nicklaus' fourth PGA win, and 12th overall professional major. Combined with his two amateur majors, that moved Nicklaus to 14 total majors won, and ahead of Jones' 13.

(The thinking about how to count majors - whether to include the amateur championships - has changed over time. Today, Nicklaus' majors total is almost always cited as 18, leaving out his amateur majors. But as noted, in 1973 Nicklaus' two amateur majors were typically included in his majors total. The fact that Nicklaus went on to win 18 professional majors in all renders this arcane discussion moot in modern times, however.)

Jack Burke Jr., winner of the 1956 PGA Championship, made the cut in his final appearance in the tournament.

Sixty-one-year-old Sam Snead finished tied for ninth, and Snead's nephew J.C. Snead finished tied for third. It was the only time both Sneads finished in the Top 10 at the same major.
