1969 U.S. Open
Recap and Scores for the 1969 U.S. Open Golf Tournament

When is the last time a golfer went through both local qualifying and sectional qualifying to get into the U.S. Open, and then won the tournament? This time - the 1969 U.S. Open.

Orville Moody - nicknamed "Sarge" because that was the rank with which he left the Army after 14 years - survived both stages of qualifying, then won the tournament by one stroke over Deane Beman, Al Geiberger and Bob Rosburg. Another stroke back in fifth was Bob Murphy.

So you might say that the Top 5 at the 1969 U.S. Open was comprised of a surprise winner and four golfers who later became (arguably) more famous for something other than their playing: Beman became PGA Tour commissioner and started the TPC golf course program; Geiberger became the first player to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event; Rosburg and Murphy enjoyed long careers as golf broadcasters on television after their playing days ended.

And Moody? This was his first victory on the PGA Tour ... and his last. He was a terrific iron player whose putting always held him back. He had only one other Top 10 finish in a major. But Moody did go on to win 11 more times after joining the Champions Tour.

Miller Barber was the third-round leader by three strokes over Moody, and with a 206 total that was a 54-hole record at the time. But Barber shot 78 in the final round and dropped to sixth.

Rosburg, who won the 1959 PGA Championship, had a chance to force a tie and a playoff on the final green, but missed a 3-foot putt for par.
