| 1966 PGA Championship | |
The winner of the 1966 PGA Championship is actually far better known for something he did 11 years later. Al Geiberger is that winner. His win here was Geiberger's only major among his 11 PGA Tour victories.
But he's much more famous for being the first player to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event, something that happened at the 1977 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic.
Today, Geiberger is remembered as "Mr. 59." But in 1966, his nickname was "The Peanut Butter Kid." That's because Geiberger kept a pocket of his golf bag full of peanut butter sandwiches and munched on them for an energy boost throughout his rounds. Following his win here - where his penchant for peanut butter first gained notoriety - Geiberger picked up a peanut butter manufacturer as one of his sponsors.
The 1966 PGA Championship is also notable as the final tournament played by Tony Lema. Lema was one of the bigger stars on Tour in the early to mid-1960s, winning 12 times from 1962-66, including the 1964 British Open. Nicknamed "Champagne Tony," he was a fan and media favorite.
Lema and his wife left Firestone Country Club and flew to Michigan where Lema was scheduled to play an exhibition. The plane they were on crashed into a water hazard of the course where Lema was due to play, killing all aboard.
