| 1963 U.S. Open | |
The 1974 U.S. Open is known as "The Massacre at Winged Foot" for the tough playing conditions and high scores. The winner that year was Hale Irwin at 287.
But that's not the U.S. Open record for highest winning score in the post-World War II era. The winning score this year, at the 1963 U.S. Open, is.
Cupit entered the final round as the leader, with Palmer among those one stroke back and Boros three behind.
But Cupit double-bogied the next-to-last hole, then missed a 12-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole that would have won him the tournament. Cupit finished with a 75, while Palmer shot 74 to tie. Boros birdied the 16th and 17th holes in the final round en route to a 72 to make it a 3-way tie.
In the 18-hole playoff, Boros started fast with a front-nine 33 and wasn't challenged by either Cupit or Palmer on the back nine, shooting 70 to Cupit's 73 and Palmer's 76.
It was the second-straight year in which Palmer lost the U.S. Open in playoff. (The man who beat him in 1962, Jack Nicklaus, missed the cut here.)
For Boros, it was his second U.S. Open victory. At age 43 and 3 months, Boros was, at that time, the second-oldest winner in tournament history.
The 1963 U.S. Open is also notable as the first tournament in the championship's history in which no amateur made the cut.
