Ben Hogan won his second straight national championship at the 1951 U.S. Open, his third U.S. Open overall. And he did it by shooting 67 - the best score of the tournament - in the final round on the very long, very tough South Course at Oakland Hills Country Club. The course had punished the field all week, and after shooting that 67 Hogan said, "I'm glad I brought this course, this monster, to its knees."
Runner-up Clayton Heafner shot the only other sub-70 round of the tournament with a final-round 69.
In third place was Bobby Locke, who at this point had won two of his four British Open titles. Locke never won the U.S. Open, but from 1947 through 1951 he played this tournament four times and finished third, fourth, fourth and third.
Julius Boros, not yet a winner on the PGA Tour, finished tied for fourth. Boros would get his first victory a year later at the 1952 U.S. Open.
Two-time PGA Championship winner Paul Runyan tied for sixth, his final Top 10 finish in a major.
