1947 British Open
Recap and Scores for the 1947 British Open Golf Tournament

At the 1947 British Open, Fred Daly became the first Irish golfer to win the Open Championship (or any of the professional majors), edging Reg Horne and amateur Frank Stranahan by one stroke.

Daly had a 4-stroke lead at the halfway mark, but a third-round 78 erased that advantage. After three rounds, Daly was tied with Norman Von Nida, Arthur Lees and Henry Cotton, and 13 players were within three strokes of the lead.

But in the final round, Daly's co-leaders all carded 76s, while Daly got round in 72, including a long birdie on the final hole. Reg Horne's birdie putt on the last hole horseshoed around the rim of the cup, staying out - otherwise he would have forced a playoff.

Stranahan 3-putted the 71st hole to bogey, then nearly holed his approach on the last, which also would have forced a playoff.

This was Daly's only major (the British Open was the only major in which he played). He finished second the next year, and third, fourth and third from 1950-52.

Stranahan turned pro in the mid-1950s, but prior to that he won the British Amateur twice and also finished second at the 1953 British Open. Stranahan never won a professional major, but the 1947 British Open was his second runner-up finish of the year; he also finished second at the 1947 Masters.
