| 1934 Masters | |
The 1934 Masters - the very first Masters tournament. The Masters was so new in 1934 that it wasn't even called The Masters. Co-founder Clifford Roberts wanted from the start to use that name for the event, but co-founder Bobby Jones, according to the official Masters Web site, thought the name too presumptuous. So in 1934 the tournament was born as the "Augusta National Invitation Tournament."
And who was the very first Masters champion? Horton Smith won the 1934 Masters. Smith, nicknamed "the Missouri Rover," edged Craig Wood by one stroke, finishing at 4-under 282. Smith, considered among the all-time great putters, made a 20-foot birdie on the 17th hole in the final round for the winning margin. (The nines at Augusta were reversed in 1934, so the 17th hole then is today's No. 8.)
Smith went on to win the 1936 Masters as well, while Wood finished second again at the 1935 Masters before winning the tournament in 1941.
Bobby Jones finished tied for 13th, which was his best showing in the 12 Masters in which he played.
