| 1925 U.S. Open | |
The 1925 U.S. Open was one of two that Bobby Jones lost in playoffs. Johnny Farrell beat Jones over 36 extra holes to win the 1928 U.S. Open, and, here, Willie Macfarlane bested Jones in 36 extra holes.
Macfarlane, a Scotsman who worked as a club pro in America, carded a then-record 67 in the second round to share the midway lead with Leo Diegel. Jones was six off the pace after opening with a 77.
Diegel faded in the third and fourth rounds with 77-78. Macfarlane was steady in Round 3 with a 72, while Jones crept closer with a 70. Ouimet and Farrell kept themselves in the picture on the final day, but neither could mount a final-round charge. Ouimet shot 76 and Farrell 78, and they tied for third, one stroke out of the playoff.
Ouimet won the 1931 U.S. Amateur, but his third-place showing here marked his final appearance in a U.S. Open.
Meanwhile, Jones tied Macfarlane in the fourth round by shooting 74 to Macfarlane's 78, and that forced an 18-hole playoff. And both players shot 75 in that 18, forcing another 18 holes. Jones and Macfarlane reached the 36th extra hole still tied, and Macfarlane won when Jones couldn't get up-and-down from a greenside bunker.
