George Sargent carded three rounds of 72 or better in lowering the tournament scoring record to 290 and winning the 1909 U.S. Open.
Sargent, like many professional golfers of this era in American golf, was British, and moved to North America to take a club pro job. At the time of his win here, Sargent was the pro at Vermont's Hyde Manor club. He later won the 1912 Canadian Open, and was the head pro as such prestigious clubs as Scioto, Interlachen and East Lake. He alse served as president of the PGA of America.
In the second round, Tom McNamara - who eventually finished runner-up to Sargent, four strokes back - shot 69, the second sub-70 U.S. Open round.
Johnny McDermott, 17 years old, played in his first U.S. Open and placed 49th. McDermott finished in the Top 10 of the next five U.S. Opens - which were also the only ones he played before his career ended in his early 20s. He lost in a playoff in 1910, then won the 1911 U.S. Open and 1912 U.S. Open.
Four-time U.S. Open winner Willie Anderson finished tied for fourth, his last Top 10 in the tournament. Anderson played only once more. In 14 appearances in this event, Anderson finished outside the Top 5 just three times.
Horace Rawlins, winner of the very first U.S. Open (1895), made his last cut in the event, placing 60th.
