1906 U.S. Open
Recap and Scores for the 1906 U.S. Open Golf Tournament

Willie Smith won the 1899 U.S. Open. But at the 1906 U.S. Open it was his brother Alex's turn. Alex Smith won this one, with Willie finishing runner-up (albeit a distant runner-up, seven strokes behind).

A third Smith brother, Macdonald Smith, never won the U.S. Open but did win more than 20 tournaments now recognized as PGA Tour victories. At the 1910 U.S. Open, Alex and Macdonald, along with Johnny McDermott, played an 18-hole playoff for the title, with Alex emerging as the victor of that one, too.

Three-time defending champion Willie Anderson - who won four of the previous five U.S. Opens - finished in fifth place.

Anderson was the head pro at the host course, Onwentsia Club near Chicago. Given that and his tournament history, it's safe to assume Anderson was a heavy favorite entering the tournament. He was in position to make a run at Smith, trailing by three entering the final round, but fell apart in Round 4 with an 84. Anderson played the U.S. Open four more times without winning. A heavy drinker, he died at age 31 in 1910.

Smith's winning total of 295 was the first sub-300 score in tournament history.
