The 1905 British Open was the first Open at St. Andrews to be played over three days (36 holes on the third day), and the first Open at St. Andrews to employ a cut (all within 15 strokes of the lead advanced to the third day).
The winner was James Braid, claiming his second of five British Open titles. In a profile on the official Open Championship Web site (www.opengolf.com), it is noted that Braid was plagued early in his career by putting problems. The R&A's history notes that Braid's putting vastly improved when he switched from a putting cleek (similar to later 1-irons) to a true putter.
At the 1905 British Open, Braid, according to the R&A history, used the putter on longer putts and the cleek on shorter ones. That combo proved effective for Braid on Old Course greens that the R&A termed "hard" and "glassy."
