1899 U.S. Open
Recap and Scores for the 1899 U.S. Open Golf Tournament

The 1899 U.S. Open was won by Willie Smith, the oldest of a set of golfing brothers from Carnoustie, Scotland. Alex Smith won two U.S. Opens; and Macdonald Smith, while he didn't win any majors, won more than 20 tournaments that are now recognized as PGA Tour victories.

Like many top Scots and English golfers of the day, the Smith brothers emigrated to the United States to take jobs as club pros. Willie Smith was employed as the golf professional at Midlothian Country Club in Chicago in 1899 when he traveled East to Baltimore to play the U.S. Open.

And Smith dominated that tournament, shooting three rounds in the 70s for a 315 total, 11 strokes ahead of runners-up Val Fitzjohn, George Low and Bert Way. That remained the tournament record for largest margin of victory until Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 shots.

According to the USGA, a long-drive contest was held prior to the start of the tournament. A golfer named W.V. Hoare won it with a drive of 296 yards.
