Notes on Masters Holes-in-One

  • So the very first hole-in-one at The Masters happened at the very first Masters Tournament. And the answer to that trivia question is Ross Somerville, an amateur. Somerville, in 1932, became the first Canadian to win the U.S. Amateur Championship.
  • The first three Masters aces happened on the 16th hole. Another Augusta National hole didn't see an ace until 1947 when Claude Harmon (Butch Harmon's father) holed out on the 12th. There's a legend about that ace that Harmon's fellow-competitor Ben Hogan failed to notice it. After Hogan hit close to the hole Harmon said, "nice shot." Hogan replied, "thanks, how was yours?" Did Hogan really fail to notice Harmon had holed out? No, he was just having some fun with his friend Harmon.
  • The 16th hole has produced more aces than Augusta National's other three par-3 holes combined.
  • The first hole-in-one on the sixth hole happened in 1954, and the first hole-in-one on the fourth hole only in 1992. Jeff Sluman remains the only golfer to ace Augusta National's No. 4 during The Masters.
  • Only five Masters champions have also scored a hole-in-one, but none during the Masters they actually won. Those four are Claude Harmon, Charles Coody, Raymond Floyd, Trevor Immelman and Adam Scott.
  • All the golfers who've made holes-in-one at The Masters have made only one; there are not yet any two-time acers.
  • Only once in Masters history have there been aces in back-to-back groups. In 2004, Padraig Harrington aced the 16th hole, then Kirk Triplett, in the next group on the tee, did the same thing. It happened in the fourth round.
  • Chris DiMarco also aced during that 2004 Masters, making it the one with the most holes-in-one: three. But the 2016 Masters tied with three aces on the 16th hole in the final round.
