A rain-plagued tournament at Bethpage Black led to a Monday finish at the 2009 U.S. Open and a surprise champion.

Quick Bits

  • Winner: Lucas Glover, 276
  • Dates: June 18-22, 2009
  • Location: Bethpage State Park (Black Course) in Farmingdale, New York
  • Tournament number: This was the 109th time the U.S. Open was played.

How Glover Won the 2009 US Open

Lucas Glover birdied the 16th hole of the final round, then parred out to win the 2009 U.S. Open for his first major championship victory. It was just the second PGA Tour win for Glover (and four years after his first).

Mike Weir looked like the golfer to beat early, after he started the tournament with a 64. But Weir, a Masters champion, gradually slipped in each round and wound up tied for 10th.

Glover opened the tournament with a 69, then shot his own 64 in the second round to pull into second place, one stroke behind Ricky Barnes.

And Glover started the final round still one behind Barnes, but Barnes struggled throughout Round 4, carded a 76, and dropped into second place, two strokes behind Glover.

Tied with Barnes in second were David Duval and Phil Mickelson. Duval, who had made only four cuts in 2009 heading into this tournament, reeled off three straight back-nine birdies to challenge for the lead, only to bogey No. 17.

Mickelson tied Glover for the lead after making an eagle on the 13th hole, but missed a couple birdie putts down the stretch and bogeyed the 15th and 17th holes. It was the fifth time Mickelson finished second at a U.S. Open, a new tournament record for times placing second.

The 2009 U.S. Open was played at Bethpage Black. Rain delays causes suspensions throughout, including on the first day. The second day was almost over before the second round even began. The tournament eventually finished on a Monday.
