Question: What is the US Open Scoring Record in Relation to Par?
Answer: How far under par has a golfer finished - how low can you go - in a U.S. Open? The U.S. Open record for most strokes under par after 72 holes is 16-under, set by Rory McIlroy at the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club.
McIlroy's 16-under bettered the previous mark of 12-under that had been held by Tiger Woods since 2000.
McIlroy finished at 268 (also a record) on the par-71 Congressional course. At one point in the final round, he had it to 17-under before "settling" for 16-under. Previous to McIlroy's exploits, only one golfer (Woods) had ever finished better than 8-under in a U.S. Open.
