Has an Amateur Ever Won the U.S. Open?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Has an Amateur Ever Won the U.S. Open?
Answer: Of course - Bobby Jones! Jones won the Open four times. But he wasn't the only amateur, or the first. Three other amateurs won prior to Jones' first win in 1923, and one more won during the decade of the 1930s. So a total of five amateurs won the U.S. Open eight times.

The first amateur to win the U.S. Open was Francis Ouimet, in 1913. Jerome Travers won in 1915 as an amateur, and Chick Evans made it two amateur wins in a row in 1916.

Jones' wins came in 1923, 1926, 1929 and 1930.

Finally, amateur Johnny Goodman won the U.S. Open in 1933.
