Question: Who was the Winner of the First U.S. Open?
Answer: The winner of the very first U.S. Open, played in 1895, was Horace Rawlins.
Rawlins defeated nine other golfers (more entered, but only 10 completed the tournament) on the 9-hole Newport (R.I.) Golf and Country Club. You might say that Rawlins had some insider knowledge of the course: He was the assistant pro there.
Rawlins was a 21-year-old Englishman. He played in 15 more U.S. Opens and had a best finish of second place in those.
For Rawlins' scores, and the score of others at the first U.S. Open, see 1895 U.S. Open.
