A. Horton Smith won the first Masters tournament, played in 1934.

Smith toured Augusta National in 4-under par 284, one stroke better than runner-up Craig Wood. Only four players broke par that first year; in addition to Smith and Wood, there were also Billy Burke and Paul Runyan, each 2-under par.

Smith's 1-stroke victory margin came on a birdie made on the 71st hole of the tournament.
