A Personal Approach

(Editor's Note: Marty Fleckman was a winner on the PGA Tour and now is a highly regarded golf instructor. In this article, Marty explains his putting approach, including grip, stance and swing path.)

There are more personal and natural instincts involved in putting than any other part of golf because putting is so much about feel and touch. However, putting is similar to hitting a full shot. We are trying to produce a consistent, square impact, and achieving that is much more important than how we achieve it. That's why you see so many different styles of putting. Whatever makes the ball go in the hole, do it.

Having said that, I am a conventional putter. I had no formal putting instruction, but acquired all my knowledge by watching other great putters, asking questions and then applying the information to myself. If it produced results under pressure, I implemented it.

There are certain principles that I think are necessary to good putting. Choose a putter you are comfortable with as far as length and lie angle. Above all, select a putter that is easy to aim at your intended target.
