Mis-Hit Diagnosis - Fat Shots

Quick Tips for Golfers Who Frequently Hit It Fat

By Brent Kelley, About.com

Here are some quick tips for golfers who often hit fat shots. Note: This is written from the perspective of right-handed golfers. Lefties should reverse directional elements in the text below.

These quick tips are from instructor Roger Gunn of GolfLevels.com.

What Happens
The club hits the ground too soon, creating a cushion of dirt and grass between the club and the ball, killing the shot.

Fat Shots - Quick Tips

Grip: Not normally a factor.

Set-up: Weight too far to the right and/or right shoulder too low at address. Aim could be too far to the right.

Ball position: Might be too far forward toward the front foot.

Backswing: Could be too far inside, away from the target line. Posture should remain the same without leaning toward the ball or lowering your head.

Downswing: Might be too far to the right. Keep your posture without lowering your head toward the ball. Shift your weight! You should have some 80-percent of your weight on the front foot at impact.
