Front Nine

By Brent Kelley, About.com

Definition: The "front nine" is the first nine holes of a golf course (Holes 1 through 9) or the first nine holes of a golfer's round.

Wait, aren't those the same thing? Usually, but not necessarily. For example, if you start your round on the 10th hole, your "front nine" consists of holes 10-18.

So a golf course's front nine is always Holes 1-9, but the front nine of your round might be different if you start on a hole other than No. 1.

Also Known As: Front 9, front side
