Forced Carry

By Brent Kelley, About.com

Definition: A "forced carry" is a situation that requires a golfer to hit his shot over a hazard in order to advance his ball. For example, a water hazard that crosses from one side of the fairway to another. There is no option to play out to the side of such a hazard, or go around it. The only option is to carry your shot over it. Hence, the term "forced carry."
