Definition: When two different sets of tee boxes are constructed on the same golf hole, the hole is said to have "alternate tees." This term does
not apply to a hole where the red and white tees are on one tee box and the blue tees on another. Instead, "alternate tees" means that there are two separate sets of red/white/blue (or whatever) tees for the same hole.
What's the point? Alternate tees are most often used on 9-hole courses to provide the golfer a different look on his second time around (his "back nine"). The two separate sets of tees on the same hole might provide a different angle of play, a different yardage, or both.
